Message: Maybe starting a topic where we all can type some chess-quotes from famous players ?
In particular, I'm searcing a quote about some guy who was talking about playing against God.. He would win with white, but draw with black, or something like that ? I thought it was Fischer who said something like that, but I can't find it anywhere..
“Only the player with the initiative has the right to attack”
(Wilhelm Steinitz)
“The winner of the game is the player who makes the next-to-last mistake”
(Savielly Tartakover)

"The refutation of a gambit frequently lies in its acceptance." ——— A Match All About the Sicilian — An unusual chess match is being held in South Carolina. It pits Judit Polgar of Hungary, the strongest woman chess payer in history, who is now ranked No. 46 in the world, but once was in the top 10, against Gregory Kaidanov, a Ukrainian-born American grandmaster, who is ranked No. 261. The match is four games and has an interesting twist: Each game begins with a different variation of the Sicilian Defense. The first game was on Monday and was won by Kaidanov, who had White, and featured the Sveshnikov. The second, which was won by Polgar, was on Tuesday and was a Dragon. The third chess game, which is being played on Wednesday, and can ...

-RJF ——— The f-pawn, part 2: is f5 the answer here? — Does White have a better option than moving the f-pawn? Continuing our look at the chess equivalent of route one football – the f-pawn advance... RB Well, let's see what happens when we push – 1 f5. The answer comes back faster than Manchester United on the break, not much. Black is under no compulsion to take the pawn and can instead centralise with 1…Nd4 or even 1…Qd4, or start getting the queen's rook into play with 1…Rac8, and 1…Nb4, hitting the d-pawn, would be irritating. All right, let's try to be logical. What's wrong here is that even if we could swap off pawns on the f-file, the f1-rook would remain blocked by the bishop. Let's ...

"When I have the White pieces, I win because I have the White pieces;
when I have the Black pieces, I win because I am Bogolyubov". (E. Bogolyubov).
"A gambit is an opening in which you sacrifice material for the sake of getting a lost game" (S. Tarrasch, I think).
"The mistakes are all there, just waiting to be made!" (S. Tartakower).
"I welcome the opportunity once more of becoming ex-World Champion" Mikhail Tal, upon winning the World Blitz Championship in the early 1980s. ——— Big Surprises in Europe — Europe has been a center of chess activity over the last month with a series of major open tournaments. The first was the Gibtelecom Chess Festival in Gibraltar, which ran from Jan. 26 through Feb. 4. Among the world-class chess players who competed were Etienne Bacrot of France, Sergei Movsesian of Slovakia, Francisco Vallejo Pons of Spain, Michael Adams of England, and Gata Kamsky of the United States. The chess tournament ended in a nine-way tie for first, with Adams winning a four-person playoff to take the title. The Moscow Open, which overlapped with Gibtelecom and ended on Feb. 7, was divided into four sections — A, B, C and D — with ...

"If you don't make a mistake, no one can beat you, not even God. It would have to be a draw."
——— Topalov Closes In on Linares Title — After eight rounds, Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, the top seed, holds a one point lead in the annual Ciudad de Linares chess tournament in Spain. Alexander Grischuk of Russia, the defending champion, is in second place after beating Vugar Gashimov of Azerbaijan in Round 8 on Sunday. Levon Aronian of Armenia is in third, having managed, like Topalov, not to have lost a game in the chess tournament. Unlike Topalov, who has won three games, Aronian has not won a game either. So far, 25 percent of the games have been decisive, but that does not mean that the other 75 percent have been dull. Quite the contrary. The games have mostly been hard fought and exciting, even ...

Message: I think Steinitz was the one who offered God the pawn and move handicap. I'm not sure how the story goes, whether Steinitz offered or actually managed to play (through an invisible telephone line) against God. But needless to say, Steinitz wasn't in the best mental shape near the end of his life. ——— Weekend of Fun and Friends Between Battles on the Chess Board — The highlight of the year for many chess players is Washington’s Birthday weekend, when four amateur team championships are held across the country. There are no cash prizes, but the chess tournaments are popular because of the camaraderie. Players walk back and forth chatting before, after and even during the games. Some renew friendships with competitors they see only once a year. The World Amateur Team East tournament in Parsippany, N.J., the biggest and oldest of the chess events, celebrated its 40th birthday this year. There were 1,150 players and 271 teams, down from 283 teams last year, said Steve Doyle, the tournament’s director, who ...

Dan maakt Hij me niets. Maar misschien speelt Hij wel Siciliaans. Dan speel ik toch de variant met loper c4. Daarmee moet ik remise kunnen maken.
--> Hans Ree asks Fischer how he would play God. Fischer answers:
"With black, I wouldn't make a chance to Him, but with white I just play the Ruy Lopez (Spanish). That's a balanced opening; then He can't touch me. But maybe He plays Sicilian. Then I would play the Bishop c4-variant. With that, it should be a draw".

Another very famous Fischer Quote was to the effect, 'I can give Knight odds to any woman in the world & win'
Incidentally, one of the Polgar sisters, whom he was friends with, asked him if that still held true ...where upon he was said to have admitted that it may no longer be the case :)

Message: ... is one I that I can't place the authorship of. James Mason, maybe?
"Place the chesspieces in their box, shake vigorously, tip the pieces over the board from the height of two feet, and there you have the style of Steinitz."
This same James Mason attended a lecture given by Steinitz at which the speaker gave vent to some controversial remarks on the chess of Paul Morphy. In the transports of oratory, Steinitz derided Morphy's habit of castling early - of tucking his king, in apparently cowardly fashion, safely in a corner.
Quoth Mason: "Sound's like a good idea, to me."

Message: ... although it might have been his statue of Moses. If it was David, Michaelangelo, when asked how he achieved his creation is said to have responded: "I just removed the bits that weren't David."
There you go.
So, when you brag about your latest victory: "I just played the moves that didn't lose".
Beats the hell out of saying some nonsense like: "I just played the moves each time that satisfied the needs of the position." More snappy.
